DRUG USE
"We forfeit three-fourths of ourselves in order to be like other people"
(Schopenhauer)

Voices From Care believes that having access to reliable information and knowledge about drugs is a good place to start. We also strongly believe that forming relationships based on trust and respect and having an opportunity to talk and be listened to can have a positive affect on our mental and physical health. If we feel good about ourselves we are unlikely to go from experimenting and enjoying ourselves with friends to developing problems with drugs that can have a devastating affect on our lives.

"When people are on drugs its very hard for them to get off them but some people dont understand that. People just think that people who are on drugs 'they started taking drugs easily, they get off them easily' if it was that easy people who are trying to get off drugs would be off them tomorrow no problems its about time people woke up and start to understand what they go through."

WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE DRUGS?

Curiosity. Some people just want to try any new experience and feel the ‘high’ that drugs can give (some drugs only need to be taken once and are so nice you will want more and more and more)

Pressure from friends to join in
It’s fashionable and the thing to do
  Boredom
The ‘buzz’ of doing something dangerous
  Parental disapproval
An escape from problems at home or at school
A way to acquire self-esteem and confidence
It’s there so why not try it? Drugs are usually bought from friends or dealers in clubs, pubs or even on the street
  Some drugs are cheap
It’s illegal and therefore may seem exciting

2 laws to consider about drugs and the Medicines Act /
The Misuse of Drugs Act

Medicines Act 1968
Controls the way medicines are made and supplied. The misuse of Drugs Act bans the non-medical use of certain drugs.

The Misuse of drugs Act 1971
Places banned drugs in different classes – A, B and C. The penalties for offences involving a drug depend on the class it is in and will also vary according to individual circumstances.

Class A drugs carry the highest penalty, class C the lowest. First offenders, who are charged with possessing drugs for their own use may only be cautioned or fined. But a caution still means you get a criminal record. Some offenders, dealers, drug smugglers can be sentenced to life imprisonment for trafficking. In England and Wales 10-17 year olds are usually dealt with by a youth court. This court has a number of options open to it, such as fines or putting the offender in a youth offender’s institution (not a prison but very close).

It is an offence to allow anyone on your premises to produce, give away or sells illegal drugs. So passing a joint or sharing ANY drugs, makes you a dealer. It is an offence even to offer to supply drugs free of charge. Allowing the smoking of cannabis in your home is also an offence.
