MENTAL HEALTH

Strong inner values can only grow in freedom never under fear" (Alice Miller)
Mental health is an important area for children and young people in care. Being removed from our families for what ever reason is an extremely stressful life changing event; even if our experiences within our homes were abusive and it was felt that we needed to be removed for our own safety. Stress and trauma do effect our mental health and people often develop different ways of coping. For example young people who have not had much control over their own lives or have experienced abuse, develop coping strategies that have come to be defined as mental health issues. There are schools of thought in this area; the medical model and the social model of mental health.
