Many young people have asked for information about sexuality and health. We believe that informed and positive sexual health is as much about self respect, opportunity and choice as it is about knowledge. For example, we might all have an understanding about the dangers of sexually transmitted infections, but still put ourselves at risk by having unprotected sex. Sexually transmitted infections amongst teenagers are on the increase. More and more people are being infected, gay and straight, men and women, boys and girls. Sexually transmitted infections are far more common than we think, and can have serious consequences for boys and girls. It really does make sense to educate ourselves of the dangers of unprotected sex to avoid the risk of S.T.Is and unplanned or unwanted pregnancies. Most boys and girls have a basic understanding about pregnancy but still have unprotected sex. The issues are different for boys and girls. In society it is commonly believed that birth control is the woman's responsibility and when a very young woman gets pregnant she is often blamed and labeled for her irresponsibility (this happened to me when I was seventeen). People rarely mention the boys who supply the sperm. No one talks about the socially conditioned belief about girls and boys or mentions the fact that most female children, as soon as they can toddle, are given a doll to care for. This is an example of social conditioning and is very powerful in shaping our ideas about ourselves. With information and understanding you can decide and plan for where you want to go – you can improve your chances of being able to make your own choices.
