VOICES FROM CARE (CYMRU)
For All Young People Who Are Or Have Been Looked After In Wales

I’m going to try and show you what Voices From Care is all about? Its not going to be easy as we do so much I’m bound to miss stuff out, so please bear with me.

In the early days when we set up (oh so long long ago) we thought that young people weren’t getting heard enough, so much in fact that things tended to happen in children’s homes and the like that shouldn’t.

That was when a bunch of people with YOUR interests at heart brought together a peer led organisation.

This is how it basically works; we were in care and probably had VERY similar experiences to most of you. Going into care for the first time, being scared and or confused, meeting lots of new people who want to help you, you can get a bit lost.

There are lots of adults trying to fix some of those things that can go wrong (most you will never meet) and they are making changes in how you will get looked after.

We promote the voices of young people at all levels in order to protect their interests. Also promoting that more opportunities are needed to get better outcomes for young people after they leave care and go and live on their own.

Some of our volunteers have even been able to go to the house of commons to tell them “how it is”.

Peer led means ‘YOU’ run the company; ‘YOU’ make the decisions and tell us what is important to you. We then do our jobs with a much much better, fresh, real and true perspective of what goes on in homes that is right and wrong. This allows us to make a real difference in the lives of not just the young people who are members but also EVERYONE who is or has been looked after by local authorities in Wales.

OK how we doing so far?
Still with me?
Proppa!

Lets Continue.

So what I’m basically saying is:

•Nobody thought YP could run a company but we are still here 10 years on
(Many thanks to all the YP who made this possible!)

•YP are on the board of directors, IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN DECISSION MAKING for our company

•Our members and volunteers tell us what’s important and what’s going on

•We make sure ‘YOUR VOICES ARE HEARD’ and listened to at all levels.

So now you know how the top works
here is what goes on at the office.

This is Rhian

"Whapnin Rhi"
is the usual greeting.

She is 40 years young, lives in Cardiff, and has been at Voices for 6 years.

When young people visit for volunteering or advice & support, Rhian is the person to see for travel arrangements or expense claims.
She also knows where everything is in the office, which is really cool as the rest of us would be mega lost without her.

Just over from Rhian is
"Leonard"

      "SAFE LEN?"

Leonard started with us 23rd may 2003. He deals with the finances and book keeping for our accountants.
This person helps us to stay within our budgets
(Which is never very much but we are working on that) otherwise its all too easy to spend too much.

PLEASE FEEL FREE AT ANY TIME TO PRINT A PICTURE OF ANY OF US AND PUT ON US A MUSTACHE, BEARD & GLASSES
Except me, you will see why later on.

OK Lets keep going

Behind Leonard is the man like the
Eugene (You-jeeeeeen, My-jeeeen – Your- jeeeeen) lol

"Please pay attention, sonic fast chatter"
& talks fast too.

Eugene has been with voices for 10 years. Starting as a member then a volunteer Eugene has recently changed position from training officer, and is now our Training & Development Co-ordinator. Directly responsible for our most valuable asset, ‘YOU’ our vols, he plans a strategy to keep vols interested in a number of different areas.

Over from there we have "Carol"

  "WASSAPATAINING?"

This is our advice and support; with plans to expand this team they help members with all sorts of things. Young people we consulted told us we needed 100% confidentiality for young people to speak to us. We still have that policy today, so whatever you want, advice, support or just to be listened to, your safe knowing we won't tell anyone unless you ask us to.

So that’s all the staff in the main office.

Main Office

And what everybody does in there.

Just down the passage, you’ve got Debbie’s room and the Vols room.

(PICTUR COMMING SOON)

  This is Debs

"Wapnin Debs?"
"Safe?"

Debs also started Voices as a volunteer and is now our chief exec. Debs has been with us for 12 years and everybody ultimately dances to the beat of her drum. I'm not sure about the drum bit but definitely a tune on a guitar.

'Thank you' for a quick Virtual Visit to Voices.
I've still got a lot of work to do on this page so please come and visit again.

You can also come visit us for real on Thursday's and Friday's, but please try and call to let us know if your coming.
